Speaker profile: Dr. Dirk K. Vanderwall

Topic: Suppression of Undesirable Reproduction Behavior in Mares and Stallions and Breeding the Performance Mare During and After Her Athletic Career

Dr. Dirk Vanderwall is an Associate Professor of Large Animal Reproduction in the Department of Clinical Studies at New Bolton Center in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he serves as the Chief of the Section of Reproduction and Director of the Hofmann Center for Reproduction.  He received his DVM degree in 1986 from Cornell University.  He then worked as the resident veterinarian on a Standardbred horse breeding farm in New York State for two years.  In 1989 he entered graduate school at the University of Idaho, where he received his PhD degree in animal physiology in 1992.  In 1993 Dr. Vanderwall became a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists.  From 1992 to 1994 he completed a post-doctoral research appointment at the University of Kentucky.  From 1994 to 1999 he was an assistant professor at Colorado State University.  From 1999 to 2009 he was an assistant and then associate professor at the University of Idaho.  In 2009 Dr. Vanderwall accepted his current position at the University of Pennsylvania where he is involved in clinical service, teaching and research in large animal reproduction.
