Dr. Byars graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1974. He interned at the University of Geogia and then entered practice in Ocala, Florida from 75-76' followed by a resident veterinarian position in Nevada where he established a small outside practice. He later returned to the University of Georgia as an Assistant Professor where he became board certified in large animal internal medicine and was later promoted to a tenured Associate Professor.
Dr. Byars came to Hagyard-Davidson-McGee in Lexington, Kentucky at the beginning of 1983 where he established an equine internal medicine hospital and related laboratory services. The service grew to 70+ employees, 5 boarded internists and the only large animal private practice ACVIM residency program in existence. He became board certified in critical care in 1999 (ACVECC). He resigned from Hagyard's in 2005 and now has a private consulting equine practice. He received the ACVIM Kirk Award for professional excellence in 2007.
Dr. Byars serves on numerous local and national committees, acts as a scientific reviewer for professional journals, and is a perennial speaker at national and international veterinary meetings.
